Track 1

This track can have up to 76 characters.  The characters can be any in the ASCII character set between the SPACE and the UNDERSCORE inclusive, plus the CARET(^).  If you leave the Total Field Length box set to zero, the field length will be variable and dependent upon the data assigned to the track.  If you set a non-zero number it must be 76 or below and you must enter a fill character in the Fill Character box.  The fill character must be in the set described above.  This will result in a fixed field length of the given size.  The fill character specified will be used to pad out those records where the assigned data does not meet this count.

Data is assigned to the track by clicking on the Assign Fields button.  A dialog identical to that used for assigning data to a template will appear.  For more information on how to use this dialog, see Assigning Data to a Holder in the Design chapter.  Remember when assigning data that it must meet the character criteria mentioned earlier.  As a result, it is recommended that you do not include a New Line in the assigned text as the character may not be an allowed data character.  (A New Line character is entered by pressing the  button or typing a Ctrl/Enter.)

When data has been assigned to a track, a message will display under the Assign Fields button to remind you.  To unassign data, click on the button again, then click the Clear button and press OK.  The message under the button will change accordingly.
